Starting this year, in a truly wonderful gesture, 60 drivers within Abu Dhabi were surprised with gifts from the Happiness Patrol for being great drivers and not having any traffic violations, an initiative by the Abu Dhabi Police. The purpose of this initiative is part of larger efforts in the UAE that promote road safety and imbue a sense of positivity in the citizens.
These drivers were pulled over in Al Ain but for a good reason, they were able to go home with gifts for being good citizens and safe drivers. The authorities remained tight-lipped about the contents of the goodies distributed in the paper bags, which have now become part of a general campaign to promote safe driving. Previous efforts have rewarded errant drivers with complimentary fuel cards, “star of honor” badges, and, in some cases, large television sets.
Maj Matar Abdullah Al Muhiri from the Deputy Directorate of Traffic Affairs in Al Ain’s Traffic Administration of Security Patrol noted that the Abu Dhabi Police would be keeping the program to honor safe drivers. “These drivers serve as role models for others,” he added. His statements reflect the authorities’ remarks that positive reinforcement can help road bound behavior.
Col Jaber Saeedan Mansouri, who heads the Department of Traffic and Security Patrols in Al Ain, also praised the drivers. He declared that such programs curb accidents and save lives on the road. “We are committed to ensuring safer roads and that recognition of good drivers helps further this goal.”
Besides Abu Dhabi, the Happiness Patrol operates across the UAE. The police in the country are also recognizing safe drivers. In Dubai, for example, in the year 2024, 22 motorists were acknowledged for having no traffic offenses or accidents registered in their names for over three years.
This initiative by the Abu Dhabi Police shows a commitment towards road safety by the UAE, through rewarding good behavior to promote a culture of safe driving.
