A new and giant step forward in the revolutionizing of cities’ means of transport is on the way as construction at Dubai’s first air taxi station near DXB, Dubai International Airport, has officially kicked off. Crown Prince of Dubai Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced this facility and is expected to cover 3,100 square meters and be able to accommodate 42,000 landings with an annual passenger number of 170,000.
The service, which is scheduled to start in 2026, will operate across four strategic stations across DXB, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. This ambitious undertaking promises to revamp the mobility landscape of the city, cutting travel times, a journey from the airport to Palm Jumeirah, for example, would take more than 45 minutes in peak hours today but only 10-12 minutes in 2026.
Joby Aviation is developing an air taxi service. It will run eco-friendly Joby S4 aircraft, using vertical take-off and landing technology. Zero-emission speed: up to 321 km/h. Instead of helicopters, these electric vehicles would be quieter.
The initiative falls under the category of Skyports, with which the design and operating mandates for the vertiport have been discussed, as well as which will manage design and operation in terms of governance and integration with the rest of the transport modes. Dubai commits to innovation, safety, and sustainability in urban mobility.
Dubai will become the world’s first city to introduce urban aerial transport, with the deployment of air taxis that will change the face of commuting in the region and usher in a new future travel pattern that resonates with the city’s vision for a smart, connected, and efficient urban environment.
