Dhs 332 Million Worth Major New Road Project to Cut Travel Time by Almost 50 Percent

A major new road project has been announced in Dubai that will see travel time cut by almost 50 percent on a major road.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract for the development of Umm Suqeim Street, from its intersection with Al Khail Road to its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road – this is a length of 4.6km.

Project Details:

“This project aims to improve the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). “It will enhance the capacity of the streets to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensure a smoother flow of traffic, and significantly reduce the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes.”

Cost and Impact:

The project costs Dhs332 million, and will reduce travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Al Khail Streets from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes. The project will increase the street’s capacity to reach 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, and help ease Umm Suqeim Street traffic. The project includes developing the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and Al Barsha Street to the south, near Kings School, through the construction of an 800-metre tunnel.

With traffic capacity being four lanes in each direction on Umm Suqeim Street and the construction of a surface intersection controlled by a traffic light, the project will enhance connectivity between four strategic axes in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

The new development will serve areas including Al Barsha South 1,2 and 3 and the Dubai Hills area.

It’s important to note that the project is building on previous completed projects.

Conclusion:

In 2013, the Roads and Transport Authority completed the first phase of the Umm Suqeim Street development project, in the section between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. In 2020, the authority launched the bridges and roads project for Dubai Hills Mall, which included a main bridge along Umm Suqeim Street at its intersection with the entrance to the Dubai Hills and Al Barsha areas.
