Dubai declares massive Metro plans including doubling the stations by 2040

Dubai has set itself an impressive target of adding more than double of existing number of metro stations by the year 2040.
Presently, there are 64 stations of the Dubai Metro spread over a network which constitutes 84 sq kilometers only.
However, announced across social media of the Government of Dubai on Sunday, June 30, the Dubai Metro will have 140 stations for over 228 sq km in 2040.
By the year 2030, Dubai will have 96 stations within an area of 140square kilometers.
This plan is a part of the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. The plans have been declared with the aim of executing the vision of the Executive Council of Dubai in enhancing the surrounding areas of Dubai Metro stations and containing the maximum carbon emissions per capita in Dubai to 16 tonnes and variety of economic benefits to the city.

The plan also indicates intended aim of increasing population within stations and introducing more of residentials, commercial, office, and service area around the Dubai Metro stations.

The plan the develop territories adjacent to the stations of the Metro rail transport with the purpose of further augmentation opportunities for economic activities and increase in share of the use of public transportation by up to 45% with a simultaneous decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases in the amount of 16 tons per capita up to 2030 was submitted for approval to the Executive Council of Dubai.

Where will the new stations for the Dubai Metro be?

The Government of Dubai has not at this time exactly where all these new stations will be, however, there is a good indication of where these can be expected to be.
At present, there are two lines running in the city of Dubai. The Green Line runs through Bur Dubai and Deira in the historical part of the city whereas the Red Line links the old city and the airport to Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020 on the southwest.

Currently construction is being made on the blue line of the Dubai Metro which is expected to cover a distance of 30km in total with 15. 5 km running underground and 14 an above the ground. 5 km above ground.

Comprising of fourteen stations out of which three are interchange stations, the project is planned to connect with red and green line as well. We also know that the development and expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport to eventually make it the world’s largest capacity airport will include Dubai Metro stations within it.
