Dubai Introduces Traffic Improvements on Sheikh Zayed Road to Reduce Congestion

To relieve congestion and secure safety along Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has undertaken three major traffic upgrades. The aim behind these improvements is for smooth traffic and additional vehicle capacity, especially during peak hours.

The first major change will be the stretching of the merging distance from Umm Al Sheif Street and Al Manara Street towards Abu Dhabi. The introduction of an additional lane to serve traffic heading toward Al Manara is also part of the improvements. Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, stated, “This should improve the capacity in this direction by 30% and fine-tune the entry and exit flow greatly.”

The second improvement targets the exit from the service road in front of the Shangri-La Hotel, which leads to the First Interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road, near the Dubai Mall. The RTA has merged the entry of the service road to the exit towards Al Safa Street and Dubai Mall. This development intends to unclog one of the most congested areas in the city and allow traffic to flow smoothly.

The third improvement will target the merging points between Al Marabi Street and Al Manara Street in the direction of Abu Dhabi. This modification aims to reduce congestion at these vital junctions, decrease waiting times, and improve vehicle movement during peak times.

Lootah explained that these measures are part of the larger traffic improvement plan along one of Dubai’s busiest roads. “These enhancements will not only ease congestion but also contribute to overall traffic safety by improving vehicle flow,” he emphasized.

The RTA’s continued infrastructure enhancement activities are vital to keeping pace with the rapid urban expansion and provide for smoother and efficient travel experiences to commuters.
