Dubai Moves Toward Sustainability with Car-Free Super Block Residential Areas

The Super Block initiative is expected to enhance sustainability and livability in the cities of Dubai. This initiative aims to support the transformation of Super Block Residential Areas into car-free zones, giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists over cars. Unveiled on Thursday by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the initiative comes as part of a bigger vision for a greener Dubai.

The proposed Super Blocks include Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone. Changes to these neighborhoods will aim to improve the quality of life for residents by increasing green areas and social interaction space, as well as shared recreational spaces for the community. By increasing the areas for pedestrian traffic, these initiatives intend to create a safer, healthier, and vibrant atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

The Super Block initiative, in keeping with Dubai’s grand ambitions for its 2040 Urban Master Plan, aims to enhance infrastructure and promote a sustainable and green city. This announcement has come closely on the heels of another still very important one: the world’s tallest well-being resort, which is part of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033. Therme Dubai will be established in Zabeel Park, set to open in 2028, featuring the world’s largest indoor botanical garden along with an interactive park that is set to attract 1.7 million visitors each year.

In parallel with the establishment of car-free zones, Dubai is also advancing great plans for the establishment of pedestrian access all over the city. A new modern network of walkways is on the planning for a size of 6,500km in 160 neighborhoods across the city. This project will encourage walking and soft mobility, thus facilitating the reduction of the carbon emissions of the city as a whole.

The dedication of Dubai to sustainability is clear by the green initiatives. In 2024, the city planted 216,500 trees—this is 17% higher than last year. There were massive afforestation and landscaping campaigns done to add 391.5 hectares of green areas. The Dubai Municipality also planted 5.3 million seedlings and changed out 45 million seasonal flowers every cycle in three cycles.

With these thoughtful projects, Dubai continues to uphold best practices in the world in care for community, environmental sustainability, and urban innovation, reaffirming its commitment to a more livable and sustainable city for future generations.
