The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, revealed his plan to transform Dubai through an initiative called ‘trackless trams’. To be installed at eight points across the emirate, the RTA-headed undertaking aims at a self-driving, green electric transport mode using camera-guided virtual tracks based on painted lines.
The new trackless trams are of three-car coach size with the capacity of up to 300. Its operating speed is of 25-60km/h but it can reach an extent of 70km/h, while each one of these trams, when it runs, travels for about 100kms before running out. It’s amazing, they say. On the ten years’ anniversary of Dubai Tram, the transport infrastructure has taken a totally different turn in the Emirate.
Sheikh Hamdan appreciated the RTA for its commitment to innovation in the pioneering of AI-driven solutions and enabling local talent. He announced that Dubai will continue to upgrade its infrastructure to support the acceleration of growth and more quality of life for residents.
Beyond the trackless tram project, there are several major ones set for the RTA in the Dh16 billion Main Roads Development Plan to 2024-2027. Of these 22, specifically designed plans improve public transport service on daily access of over 2.2 million passengers and users, which also includes in pipeline dedicated bus and taxi lanes to promise improved arrival of buses at a remarkable rate of 42 percent compared with their current travel time.
With these initiatives in place, Dubai looks forward to upgrading the public transport network in support of the emirate’s goal of becoming a leader in sustainable and smart mobility solutions.
