Etihad Rail announced the commencement of high-speed trains that would change the expedition from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. The company introduced its state-of-the-art, all-electric passenger train which cuts travel time drastically to 30 minutes, down from the various hours of current travel.
The new high-speed train will operate at speeds of up to 350 km/h, passing through six major stations. Key places within both cities, namely, Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas Island, and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport, will be connected to Al Maktoum International Airport and to the Al Jaddaf area of Dubai. This high-speed service is being developed for easy and efficient travel between the two emirates.
Etihad Rail Project is also working on the introduction of a slow-speed passenger train, set to cover the entire UAE and go into neighboring GCC countries upon the completion of the GCC Railway project. Regular trains running at 200 km/h, with a capacity of 400 passengers, will traverse the major metropolis of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah, offering scenic excursions along Masirah and through the Liwa Desert, with the purpose of interlinking the Emirates with Oman.
The fast-speed train and the railway project are still undergoing planning and tenders have been put for review. While the project is still in its early stages, Etihad Rail expects that it will play a significant role in the economic prosperity of the UAE, contributing about Dh145 billion to its GDP over the next 50 years. However, there is no official completion or commencement date for the service.
This grand national project is intended to be a part of the UAE vision to improve connectivity within the country and across the region, hence also changing how the UAE residents and visitors embark on their journeys between the two major cities. The regular-speed passenger train has been spruced up and is now expected to go into action, but there is still no word about its launch date.
