Haq Al Laila 2024 in UAE: A traditional event uniting families and communities

Haq Al Laila 2024 in UAE; A customary event which unites families and communities, marking the 15th night of Sha’ban with Haq Al Laila, also known as Qargian, a cherished tradition passed down through generations. This cultural heritage, observed in the UAE and other Gulf countries, symbolizes the welcoming of the holy month of Ramadan.

Emirati Tradition:

The Emirati tradition of Hag Al Laila, comes with a special experience that brings communities together – young children go around the neighborhood, paper bags in their hands, receiving some sweet treats, or in some exceptional cases, even some money. They embraced this joyful activity as they sang cheerful songs for their elders. At day’s end, they would come together to relish in homemade juices, sweet and vibrant in color.

In contemporary times, Emirati families uphold the tradition of Hag Al Laila by dressing children in traditional attire, relishing old songs, and engaging in playful activities. Additionally, they continue adorning their homes with vibrant hues and sharing special treats like nuts and chocolates with children.

In anticipation of the occasion, families buy traditional sweets and nuts as gifts before welcoming visiting children. Various entities across the UAE organize events to commemorate Hag Al Laila, fostering an understanding and appreciation of the country’s traditions.

In Dubai, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority is set to organize heritage activities to celebrate Hag Al Laila in the historic neighborhood of Al Shindagha. Among the planned activities is a jewelry-making workshop titled ‘Crafting Marriya Umm Al Schnaff,’ designed to inspire children to delve into the traditional art of jewelry making.

Additional workshops will delve into the origins and crafting of traditional Emirati attire, emphasizing its significance in local culture. Furthermore, a henna workshop will teach children the art of blending henna and creating unique designs.

Children will also have the chance to gather gifts and sweets and engage in popular games like ‘Al Karabi’ and ‘Shad Al Habl’ as they move between houses, singing ‘Atoona Hag Al Laila,’ a song that underscores the importance of giving and sharing during this auspicious night.

Reflecting on the significance of preserving cultural practices, Hessa Al Shehhi from Ras Al-Khaimah, said: “It is our responsibility to pass down these customs to present and future generations. Hag Al Laila serves as a reminder of the values of generosity, unity, and gratitude that define our society.”
