The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has launched a revolutionary new mode of public transport called the Rail Bus. This futuristic, eco-friendly vehicle is slated to revolutionize the movement of urban spaces in the emirate with a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation.
Currently showcased at the 2025 World Government Summit in Madinat Jumeirah, the Rail Bus is an autonomous solar-powered vehicle designed to carry up to 40 passengers in one trip. The exterior of the bus is gold and black, with modern orange seating. Each carriage has 22 seats with space for disabled access so that all commuters can use them. Viewers will have screens above their heads updating real-time information about forthcoming stops, weather, and time. Safety instructions are displayed on boards visible to commuters throughout the vehicle, and control panels can be found at both ends of the carriage.
The Rail Bus boasts a unique commitment to sustainable design. It operates entirely on solar energy, and the vehicle itself is environmentally friendly and recyclable-a cost-efficient choice. The inexpensive system rides on elevated tracks, scheduled for implementation throughout the emirate. The Rail Bus is capable of reaching speeds of 100 km/h, constructed using a lightweight, scalable 3D-printed structure that reduces environmental impact and increases operational efficiency.
This transport innovation complements Dubai’s aspiration of establishing itself as the world’s smartest city, as well as other national programs, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, Dubai’s Zero Emission Public Transport Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030, with the latter aims at making 25% of daily trips using autonomous vehicles. The Rail Bus will be linked to the larger public transport system to ensure seamless connectivity, particularly for first and last mile journeys.
The exact launch date will be confirmed shortly, but it is clear that the Rail Bus will change Dubai’s public transport infrastructure. During the World Government Summit, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed visited the RTA platform displaying the Rail Bus. This grand project secures Dubai’s position as a smart and sustainable mobility hub on the global map.
