The blessed month of Ramadan
In Islam, Ramadan is regarded as the most holy time of the year. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and begins/ends with the appearance of the crescent moon and is celebrated by millions of Muslims around the world. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise until sunset for 30 days, and are held to higher moral standards. For Muslims, it is a time to practice self-restraint, atonement, and a time to build a stronger relationship with Allah. During the whole month of Ramadan, Muslims fast and pray to seek forgiveness, blessings, and mercy of Allah Almighty. Muslims all over the world prepare for this month in advance. Ramadan traditions in Kuwait

In Kuwait, Gergean is celebrated on the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of Ramadan. It is a day where children go to different houses in their neighborhood and sing songs to receive candy. In the Levant region, people walk through the streets during Suhoor time to wake up the neighborhood for Suhoor. They play drums, flutes, and sing songs all throughout the neighborhood. It is also a tradition to hang colorful lanterns in front of your house and display Ramadan decorations.
In many countries throughout the Middle East, cannons are fired every day to signal the end of people’s fasting when the sun sets, also called Maghrib time. This oldest custom to fire cannon at the time of Iftaar still exists in Kuwait. At the time of Iftaar, a blast from the cannon fired so people get signaled that now it’s time to break their fast depending on Kuwait Ramadan timings. The firing of the cannon catches the attention of several families and children daily, and it is also telecast live on Kuwait radio and TV.
The month of Ramadan is deemed as the high time for charity and showing kindness towards others in Kuwait. The most important social activity during Ramadan in Kuwait is the Ghabgha gathering in which dinner party is arranged between the Iftaar and Suhoor in which delicious cuisines served by the host of party and people enjoy with their families and friends. It is also one of the oldest traditions in Kuwait that is still in practice.
The special traditional food of Kuwait like Al-Harees, Tashreeb, Lugaymat, Jareesh, Harees, Katayef, Vimto Juice, Qamardeen Juice, and Laban is the essential part of the table in Suhoor and Iftaar according to Kuwait Ramadan timings. Markets and shops are closed in the afternoon and for prayers depending on Kuwait Ramadan timings and reopen after Iftaar so people can do the shopping and have fun with their families.
Like other Muslims for Kuwaiti people, the last 10 days of Ramadan are equally important. They spend odd nights worshipping and praying in mosques and regularly pray tarawih during the month of Ramadan depending on Kuwait Ramadan timings. In the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan, approximately 180,000 people attend the Grand Mosque to pray the Tarawih prayers(the special prayers in Ramadan).
Ramadan customs are no exception although some customs may have vanished, but the spirit to celebrate of this holy month is alive and prosperous in the Muslim community worldwide.
