Pakistani Cab Driver Saved the Day for Indian Girl in Dubai

In a heroic incident, a Pakistani cab driver saved an Indian girl from a terrible fate as he returned her the wallet that she had lost containing important documents including her UK student visa.

The Pakistani cab driver, Modassir Khadim, in Dubai went out of his way to recover the owner of the wallet, Rachel Rose as she and her family looked for recovering the lost possession. Rose, who flew to Manchester on January 8, had lost the wallet in Khadim’s cab late evening on January 4, just three days before she was to return.

Rose, a corporate law student at Lancaster University, was on her way to attend a friend’s birthday party while on holiday in Dubai when she lost her wallet in Khadim’s cab late evening on January 4.

“She had got into his taxi with another friend near Burjuman around 7:30 pm on January 4,” her mother, Sindhu Biju, told. “Just then, they saw their other friends in another car and decided to join them. They immediately left the taxi and Rose didn’t realise that she left her wallet behind.”

Apart from her UK residence permit card [T4 student visa], the wallet contained her Emirates ID, UAE driving license, health insurance card, credit card and more than Dh1,000 in different currencies, needless to say, that the articles the wallet contained were of utter importance.

With an exam on 13th January in the UK, Rose and her family panicked and contacted the police to help find out Modassir.

The CCTV footage from the mall’s premises was checked but the car was not clear. “Since they had not started the journey, the driver had not started the meter. Hence, it was difficult to trace the driver through the RTA call center,” said Sindhu.

The family much appreciated the efforts on RTA’s part as they said the staff was very extremely cooperative and gave high priority to the case.

Modassir Khadim, on the other hand, had realized after completing another ride that the wallet is of Rachel Rose as the cards in the wallet had her name over it and instantly called up RTA’s call center and asked if they could help find the holder of the driving license that he found.

“I thought it will be easier for them to find the license holder. But it was around 10 pm. When I reached the police station, I met another taxi driver who advised me to try to get the girl’s number and give it as the procedures might take a long time.”

He said he then tried to get her contact through Etisalat by giving her Emirates ID number and through the insurance company by providing the insurance card number but was not successful as it was against the privacy clauses for the entities to disclose the contact number.

“Finally, the RTA call center called me back when I was finishing my duty at 3:30 am and verified the details that matched with their complaint. I was given their number following which I went to their house to drop the wallet.”

The Indian family from Kerala also wrote a letter to RTA appreciating Khadim. On this heroic act, the father of the girl tried rewarding the efforts on the Modassirs part by giving him Dh600. “I refused to take it saying she is like my younger sister. But he insisted that I take it,” said Khadim, the only brother of four sisters back home.
