Pakistani mangoes arrive in the UAE

The fruits arrived in the UAE indicating the beginning of the mango season in the country, KBC Logistics has announced. Thus, the supply of these mangoes is considered adequate although the yield in Pakistan which has reduced due to climate change effects is lower.

Export that Pakistan allowed was from May 20, 2024, but the first vessel was allowed to import on May 23, 2024 with approximately 192 containers of Sindhri and approximately 4,600 tonnes of Sindhri. The two most famous varieties are the Sindhri and Chanusa; these are well-known for their high pulp content and sweet flavor. This year, the cost of transportation has increased, and this has seen the price of mangoes slightly affected.

Due to inflation in Pakistan and increased freight charges, prices have gone up, ranging from Rs280 to Rs320. It was noted that suppliers are charging slightly higher prices, with a 6kg box of Sindhri mangoes currently selling for Dh28-30 in the wholesale market.

The bureaucrats have observed that climate change is declining mangoes yield in Pakistan and therefore the amount that may be exported in the future may be limited. However, the following challenges can be identified: First movers, exports to the UAE have started and focus on early shipments to capture initial orders. High-Quality control is maintained, and no unfavorable weather conditions were observed that may hamper mango crop production. Consequences of climatic variations on production levels are stated, some of these varieties preferred for export have been reported to be in limited domestic availability.
