Sharjah implements AI-powered traffic sensors to alleviate congestion

Sharjah will soon experience an ease in traffic congestion as artificial Intelligence (AI) powered signals will be installed in the emirates.

Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA)

Sharjah’s Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) said 48 AI-enhanced traffic signals will be installed. The move is likely to boost the traffic flow by 30%. will boost traffic flow by up to 30 percent. Sensor Devices and cameras will analyze real-time traffic conditions, enabling the adjustment of signal timings. An AI developed can then analyze traffic patterns over the past few weeks and determine which lights could be worth adjusting in urban areas. It then suggests settings changes to reduce stop-and-go traffic.

AI Improvements

AI helps traffic controllers to spot abnormal traffic conditions and bases its forecasts on similar historic traffic situations. AI can also be used for adaptive signal control. AI traffic cameras represent a significant advancement in the field of traffic management and safety, and they are likely to become even more sophisticated and widespread in the years to come. While their impact on society is complex and multifaceted, there is no doubt that they will continue to play a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient transportation on our roads.

Yousif Alathmani, the chairman of SRTA, explained that the AI-driven signals will extend or shorten the green or red-light duration based on traffic volume and patterns. The AI system undergoes continuous learning, with regular updates to enhance its capabilities.

In 2023, the SRTA implemented two projects on Ittihad Road and in the Al Taawun area to address traffic concerns between Sharjah and Dubai.

Furthermore, the SRTA recently announced a collaboration with BEEAH to expand the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Sharjah. This initiative aims to deploy hundreds of chargers along highways and in various districts, covering crucial commercial and urban areas.
