Sustainability Now Essential for Aspiring Teachers in Abu Dhabi Schools

In Abu Dhabi, for instance, a demonstrated track record of success in sustainability is the new requirement in the hiring process of aspiring teachers – a testimony to education’s growing commitment to environmental responsibility. One example is Gems Founders School in Masdar City, GFA, which, in association with The Alliance for Sustainable Schools, becomes the first in the Gulf to introduce a net-zero strategy.

Sustainability is deeply ingrained at GFA through the school curriculum and culture. Much has already been achieved through a huge reduction in carbon footprint; 40% has already been realized, which works out to be savings of 1,154 tonnes of CO2 every year, primarily through energy-saving measures and from renewable energy sources. The commitment towards sustainability comes through such practices in the school as the generation of 3.1 million kWh through solar panels and energy-efficient building design.

Albertha Huyser, Principal of GFA, explained that they sought to have a “sustainnovation” attitude-be at the same time capable of sustainability and innovation. She added that even while selecting teachers, each was asked how he or she will integrate sustainability into his or her lessons and the innovation. Teachers who had such an attitude were selected. “We want our teachers to model ecological stewardship, and we ensure that every lesson, regardless of the subject, incorporates principles of sustainability, she added.”.

Besides the energy-efficient buildings, GFA engages the students in sustaining initiatives such as beach cleaning and green cafeteria culture. In fact, plastic use is banned in school, and reusable water bottles are used, as well as recyclable materials only are availed for use. Biofuel tanks for school transport and electric vehicle charging stations would soon be laid to facilitate eco-friendly commuting.

GFA is leading the change in sustainability in educational institutions within the UAE, preparing students as the next generation of leaders to create a greener future.
