After India defeated Australia to earn a place in the much-awaited final, Dubai is ready to host the grand finale of the Champions Trophy. The ticketing storm, however, has begun, as excited fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the action of the Champions Trophy final in person find prices sky-high on resale sites.
The match on March 9 has seen tickets being sold out within a matter of minutes, forcing many to miss out. All tickets had been sold within just 40 minutes despite fans being on online queues for as long as an hour, while even the premium-priced Dh12K Sky Box tickets went like hot cakes. Such rapid selling left disappointed fans dazed at the speed with which it seemed even the most expensive seats were taken.
However, the real shock set in with these tickets being uploaded for resale with skyrocketing prices. On Viagogo, Sky Box tickets were advertised for as high as Dh97,746, a crazy 714% rise from the original price. The site further claimed that thousands of interested buyers, with some being labelled as the ‘last tickets available, viewed these tickets.’
In addition to inflated prices for premium tickets, resale websites also saw massive price hikes for lower-tier seats. For instance, XchangeTickets offered Dh250 General Admission tickets for Dh3,000, an astounding 1,100% price hike. Other resale platforms like Ticombo also reported a significant increase in ticket prices, with certain categories costing over Dh11,000 for the Grand Lounge and Dh6,000 for the Premium section. The platform even launched an online “proposal” system where buyers could negotiate ticket prices with the sellers.
Such a price surge is no stranger to cricketing fans in the region. Resale prices for the India-Pakistan match on February 23 shot up, with tickets going for as high as 600% of the original price.
The plan was to originally have the Champions Trophy final in Pakistan, but due to security fears, India would not travel there, so Dubai was picked as a neutral venue of choice to lure cricketing fans from around the world.
For those remaining hopeful of setting foot in the final champion match, a sale for tickets on the ground would be made available at the Box Office of Dubai International Stadium as reported on the ICC website.
