The Stem Cells Research Centre at the United Arab Emirates University has formally been launched, the first of its kind in the academic scene of the country. The center will boost local manufacturing and will enter into partnerships with global firms, thus positioning the UAE to be a leader in the fast-growing stem cell market.
The market estimated at $711.8 million (Dh2.6 billion) in 2024 is expected to almost double by 2030 to reach $1.3 billion (Dh4.7 billion). This phenomenal increase in the market is going to be propelled by the government boosting investments, in addition to the ever-growing demand for innovative medical treatments, especially regenerative medicine.
The research facility will promote the advancement of stem cell research and therapy as a historic milestone of the UAE’s wider efforts to bring a revolution to healthcare and make strides in becoming a hub for advanced medical sciences in the world. Dyadic partnerships will be forged with local and global key stakeholders. The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre has partnered with UAEU since 2019, providing funding for research, clinical trials, and knowledge transfer between experts.
Prof. Fatma Al Jasmi, Acting Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at UAEU, emphasized in her inauguration speech that the new facility has strategic importance. “The opening of the Stem Cell Research Centre is a significant achievement that reflects the university’s vision to promote research innovation and build national capacities in medical sciences,” she said.
Al Jasmi stated, “Wiith the establishment of this centre, Emirati scientists of the future will be trained to develop advanced medical solutions as well as to position the UAE amongst the leaders in the world in the field of regenerative medicine.”
The new research centre is expected to play an important role in the shaping of the future of healthcare in the UAE and beyond, with a focus on contemporary research and collaborations. This initiative is directed to be in tandem with the country’s vision to lead in advanced medical technologies, thus furthering its growing foothold in the world stem cell arena.
