UAE RAINS: WHEN AND WHERE TO EXPECT THEM?

July is supposedly the rainy season but there are most probably a few summer showers in the next few weeks up to the end of the summer, which is in September and no rain is expected up to this weekend.

Presently the country is in the lull period but this does not mean that there will be no summer rains as the UAE receives monsoon low pressure from India, according to the national weather forecaster.

In the past, there were heavy flood as a result of torrential rains in northeast India which affects over a million people in the south Asian country. At the same time now, houses in the city of Sanaa in Yemen are falling under pressure exerted by heavy rainfall, as months of floods and storms target the country.

Expected  rainfall this Summer in UAE

A recent interview with Dr. Ahmed Habib of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) indicated that the UAE is expecting rainfall in the next few weeks given that rain is normal during the summer and perhaps lasts till September 23; though the eastern region of the country will see the formation of convective clouds There are no rain expectations in the country for the next few days.

So what then influences the weather and Habib stressed that July is a summer month where heat increases because of the extension of thermal lows, including the monsoon lows originated from the Indian subcontinent.

Dry and humid regions in the eastern and southern mountains are characterized by formation of clouds with high temperature triggering afternoon rain in some of the interior regions.

“In summer odds are that we would experience the effect of the (Indian) monsoon over our area. Currently, India and Yemen are experiencing monsoon,” Habib added.

Last rain last this summer

June 18 to June 24 had light to heavy scattered showers, which marked the official start of summer in the country.

Ras al-Khaimah’s Al Musseili and Shauka experienced a shower on June 29 with hail in Filli, Sharjah. Since then, the weather has been fairly humid although at times there might be some light showers.

How much does it rain in July?

The largest daily rainfall amount was 234.9mm observed on the 24th of the month in port of Fujairah in 2022. July 2023 was characterized by the most frequent cases of fog where it occurred 11 times while mist occurred five times.

Past accounts stressed the fact that it was possible for the UAE to have occasional rainfall throughout the year if actionable clouds and proper cloud seeding is conducted.

With the aid of firing salt flares towards the clouds, it has been seen that there is an upswing of 15 to 25 percent possibility of rainfall in the country.
