As Ramadan approaches, supermarkets throughout the UAE are presenting major Ramadan discounts on thousands of products. The Ministry of Economy declared that major outlets are offering up to 50% off on 10,000 products, while one cooperative society offered discounts approximating Dh35 million. Lulu Hypermarket is also in on the act, putting up to 65% off on 5,500 products.
These discounts also come in the wake of rising food imports, with daily deliveries to Al Aweer Fruits and Vegetables Market in Dubai being 15,000 tonnes and 6,000 tonnes in Abu Dhabi. This ramping up is to ensure ample food supplies are on hand for the high-demand Ramadan period.
As a way to protect consumers, the ministry is keeping the prices of nine essential commodities namely cooking oil, eggs, rice, and dairy products, from rising. The ministry does not permit any supermarkets to raise their prices without attaining prior permission, and there will be 420 inspections during Ramadan. The ministry has also agreed with the concerned local authorities to carry out further inspections.
Already this year, the ministry’s inspectors have conducted 768 campaigns and 80,249 visits in 2022, noting over 8,300 violations. The inspection process is not solely manual; prices are monitored through an online network with 14 major chain outlets. If a price goes over and above the set limit, it is flagged for scrutiny.
Consumers may contact the toll-free number 8001222 or use social media to report any price or product grievances. In 2024, 93% of the 1,891 complaints lodged were settled within a short time.
