Women Take the Wheel as Driving Ban Lifted in Saudi Arabia

The ban on female drivers will become a part of Saudi history. Now Saudi women are allowed to drive in the kingdom.

Few women who have driver’s licenses are excited about hitting the road. The Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information estimates that 2,000 women will get a license over the coming weeks.

Women are spending hours in the desert polishing their practical driving skills. They are learning theoretical and technical skills at the country’s driving schools that how to change a tire, how to correctly position their hands on the steering wheel and how to accurately assess speed.

Women take the wheel as driving ban liftedThe public security directorate reported no unusual incidents one hour after the ban ended. Approximately 3 million women expected to drive by 2020.
