Mid-market rates. Exchange houses and banks add a margin. Rates by Exchange Rate API
Why the rate at the exchange house is different
The figures above are mid-market rates, the midpoint between buying and selling. Exchange houses, banks and money transfer apps add a margin on top, and some also charge a fixed fee. When you compare providers, look at how much the other person actually receives rather than the advertised rate alone.
Getting the most from your remittance
- Compare two or three apps or exchange houses on the total received, not just the fee.
- Bigger, less frequent transfers often work out cheaper than many small ones because of fixed fees.
- Check the rate on the day you send: it can move noticeably within a week, especially for the rupee and the peso.
How the UAE dirham peg works
The UAE dirham has been fixed at 3.6725 to the US dollar since 1997, and the Central Bank of the UAE keeps it there. This means the dirham moves exactly as the dollar does against every other currency. When the dollar strengthens against the Indian rupee, for example, one dirham buys more rupees, and when the dollar weakens, it buys fewer. Nothing that happens in the UAE economy changes the dirham against the dollar.
What moves the rate against INR, PKR and PHP
Because the dirham follows the dollar, the rates on this page move with the dollar against each home currency. The Indian rupee responds to oil prices, foreign investment flows into India and decisions by the Reserve Bank of India. The Pakistani rupee is affected by Pakistan’s foreign reserves, IMF programmes and import demand. The Philippine peso tends to strengthen in the months before Christmas, when remittances from abroad peak. These are the reasons the rate can change by a few paise or paisa from one day to the next.
Ways to send money from the UAE
Most residents use one of four routes. Exchange houses have branches in every mall and residential area, accept cash and usually have competitive rates for South Asian currencies. Exchange house apps offer the same rates with lower fees and transfers that often arrive within minutes. Bank transfers from a UAE account are convenient for large amounts but can come with higher fees and a weaker rate. International money transfer apps can be cheap for some routes, especially to Europe and the Philippines. Whichever you choose, the provider must be licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE.
A checklist before you send
- Compare the amount the receiver will get, not just the rate or the fee on its own.
- Make sure the receiver’s name matches their bank account or ID exactly, to avoid delays.
- Keep your Emirates ID valid: providers need it for every transfer.
- For large transfers, ask whether a better rate is available above a certain amount.
- Keep the receipt or the app record until the money has arrived.
Exchanging cash for travel
For travel, exchange houses in malls usually give better rates than airport counters. Some currencies, such as the Saudi riyal and the Omani rial, are easy to find; less common currencies may need to be ordered a day in advance. Paying abroad with a UAE card is convenient, but check your bank’s foreign transaction fee first, and always choose to pay in the local currency rather than in dirhams when a card machine asks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the AED to INR rate today?
Today’s UAE dirham to Indian rupee rate is in the table above, in the 1 AED = column. It is the mid-market rate; exchange houses and apps usually give slightly fewer rupees after their margin.
What is the AED to PKR rate today?
The current dirham to Pakistani rupee rate is shown in the table above. Check what your exchange house or app will actually pay out, because their rate includes a margin.
Why does the dirham never change against the US dollar?
The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997, so AED to USD stays fixed. Against other currencies the dirham moves exactly as the dollar does.
What is the cheapest way to send money home from the UAE?
Compare the total amount your family receives, not just the fee. Apps and exchange houses with a slightly better rate often beat a zero-fee offer, and fewer, larger transfers usually cost less than many small ones.
How often are these exchange rates updated?
Several times a day. Use them as a guide and confirm the exact rate with your bank, exchange house or app before sending.
Will the AED to INR rate go up tomorrow?
Nobody can say for sure. Because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, AED to INR moves with the dollar-rupee rate, which depends on oil prices, interest rates and how much money flows into India. Use today’s rate as your guide rather than waiting for a forecast.
Where can I get the best exchange rate in Dubai?
Compare a few licensed exchange houses and transfer apps on the amount actually received, not the headline rate. Airport counters usually give the weakest rates, while apps and branches in busy areas such as Karama, Deira and Bur Dubai are often more competitive.
How much is 1,000 AED in Indian rupees today?
Look at the quick conversions table above, which shows 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 dirhams in Indian rupees, Pakistani rupees, Philippine pesos and Bangladeshi taka at today’s mid-market rate.
Is the open market PKR rate different from this rate?
Yes, it can be. In Pakistan the open-market rate for dirhams can differ from the interbank rate, and exchange houses in the UAE set their own buying rates. Ask your provider how many rupees will be paid out before you send.
