Mid-market rates. Banks and remittance companies add a margin. Rates by Exchange Rate API

Getting the best rate when you send money

The rates above are mid-market rates. Banks, exchange houses and transfer apps add a margin to this rate and may also charge a fee, so compare the amount the receiver actually gets rather than the headline rate. Rates offered at airports are usually the weakest.

How the riyal peg works

The Saudi riyal has been fixed at 3.75 to the US dollar since 1986, and the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) keeps it there. This is why the riyal never moves against the dollar, and why its rate against every other currency moves exactly as the dollar does. If the dollar strengthens against the Indian rupee, one riyal buys more rupees; if the dollar weakens, it buys fewer.

What moves the rate against INR, PKR, BDT and PHP

Since the riyal follows the dollar, these rates depend on how each home currency is doing against the dollar. The Indian rupee is affected by oil prices, foreign investment and the Reserve Bank of India. The Pakistani rupee responds to Pakistan’s foreign reserves and IMF programmes. The Bangladeshi taka and the Philippine peso are shaped by their central banks and by remittance flows, which rise before Eid and Christmas.

Ways to send money from Saudi Arabia

Residents usually choose between three routes. Remittance centres of the big banks and licensed money transfer companies have branches in every city, accept cash and offer competitive rates for South Asian currencies. Their mobile apps offer the same service with lower fees and transfers that often arrive the same day. Digital wallets licensed in the Kingdom have become popular for smaller amounts. Every provider must be licensed by SAMA, and all of them will ask for a valid Iqama or national ID.

Fees and VAT on transfers

The exchange rate is not the whole cost. Most providers charge a fixed fee per transfer, and 15% VAT applies to that fee. Some offer a slightly weaker rate in exchange for a zero fee. To compare fairly, enter the same amount in two or three providers and look at what the receiver will actually get.

A checklist before you send

  • Make sure your Iqama is valid: expired IDs block transfers.
  • Check the receiver’s name and account number against their bank details.
  • Compare the amount received, not just the rate.
  • Keep the transaction reference until the money has arrived.
  • For large amounts, ask whether the provider offers a better rate above a set limit.

Exchanging cash for Hajj, Umrah or travel

Visitors arriving for Hajj or Umrah can exchange money at the airport, but exchange offices in the cities, especially around the Haram in Makkah and Madinah, often give better rates. Cards issued abroad work almost everywhere in Saudi Arabia; check your bank’s foreign transaction fee before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 Saudi riyal in Indian rupees today?

Today’s SAR to INR rate is in the table above, along with what 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 riyals come to in rupees.

Why does the riyal rate against the dollar never change?

The Saudi riyal has been pegged at 3.75 riyals to the US dollar since 1986. Its rate against other currencies moves only when those currencies move against the dollar.

When is the best time to send money from Saudi Arabia?

Nobody can predict daily moves reliably. Because the riyal follows the dollar, a stronger dollar means more rupees, pesos or taka per riyal. Many people send on a fixed day each month instead of trying to time the market.

Is the SAR to AED rate fixed?

Almost. Both the riyal and the dirham are pegged to the US dollar, so 1 riyal is always close to 0.98 dirhams. Small differences come only from the fees and margins providers add.
