How the Saudi gold price is worked out

Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. Because the riyal has been pegged at SAR 3.75 to the dollar since 1986, the Saudi price moves only with the world gold price, not with the currency. One ounce is 31.1 grams, and lower purities are priced by their gold content: 22K is 91.7% gold, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%.

What you pay in a shop

Jewellers add a making charge on top of the gold value, which depends on the design and the shop. Gold jewellery also carries 15% VAT in Saudi Arabia, while investment bars and coins of 99% purity or more are zero-rated. Ask for the gold weight, purity, making charge and VAT to be shown separately on the invoice.

Why 21K is the most popular gold in Saudi Arabia

Walk into almost any jewellery shop in Saudi Arabia and most of the pieces will be 21K. It is 87.5% gold, so it keeps the deep yellow colour and value of high-purity gold, while being hard enough to wear every day. 18K is common in diamond and modern designs, and 22K and 24K are sold mainly to buyers from South Asia and to people buying for savings.

Checking purity and buying safely

Gold sold in Saudi Arabia must be stamped with its purity, such as 875 for 21K or 750 for 18K, and shops are supervised by the Ministry of Commerce. Buy from shops that give a proper tax invoice listing the weight, karat, gold price, making charge and VAT. Keep the invoice: you will need it to sell or exchange the piece, and it is the easiest way to prove what you paid if there is a dispute.

Gold markets in Saudi cities

Every major city has a traditional gold market where many shops sit side by side, which makes it easy to compare making charges. Jeddah’s historic Al-Balad district is known for its gold shops, and Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah and Dammam all have busy gold souqs as well as mall jewellers. Pilgrims often buy gold in Makkah and Madinah: the gold price is the same as elsewhere in the Kingdom, so compare the making charge before you buy.

Bars and coins as savings

If you are buying gold to save rather than to wear, bars and coins usually work out better. They have little or no making charge, they sell back closer to the market price, and investment gold of 99% purity or more is zero-rated for VAT, while jewellery carries 15% VAT. Banks and large jewellers sell bars from 1 gram upwards.

Selling old gold

Shops buy old gold at a buyback price below the selling rate in the table, and may deduct a small amount for testing and melting. Bring your Iqama or national ID and the original invoice if you have it, and ask what the shop would pay in cash and what it would allow if you exchange the piece for new jewellery.

Travelling with gold

When you enter or leave Saudi Arabia carrying cash, gold or other precious metals worth more than SAR 60,000 in total, you must declare them to customs. Your home country also has its own limits on how much gold you can bring in duty-free, so check them before you travel, and keep invoices with you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 21K gold rate in Saudi Arabia today?

Today’s 21K price per gram is in the table above, next to 24K, 22K and 18K. 21K is the most common purity for jewellery in Saudi Arabia.

Why is gold cheaper in the gold souq than in a mall?

The gold value is the same everywhere because it follows the world price. The difference is the making charge, which is often lower in souqs and wholesale areas, and open to negotiation.

Is there VAT on gold in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Gold jewellery carries 15% VAT. Investment-grade bars and coins with a purity of 99% or more are zero-rated.

Is gold cheaper in Saudi Arabia or the UAE?

The raw gold price is almost the same in both, since both currencies are pegged to the US dollar. The final bill differs with making charges and VAT: 15% in Saudi Arabia against 5% in the UAE, where tourists can also claim a VAT refund.

How often does the gold rate change?

The world gold price trades almost around the clock on weekdays, so the rate moves during the day. This page refreshes every 30 minutes.
