Worked out from the international gold spot price (USD 4,016.00 per ounce) at AED 3.6725 per USD. Jewellery shops add making charges and VAT, so shop prices are higher.
How the UAE gold rate is worked out
Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. Because the dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725, the UAE rate moves with the international price almost minute by minute. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one tola (still the favourite unit for South Asian buyers) is 11.6638 grams.
22K is 91.6% pure, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%, so their prices are simply that share of the 24K rate.
Why the shop price is higher than this table
The rates above are for the metal itself. In a shop you also pay a making charge for the design, which varies a lot between plain bands and intricate pieces, plus 5% VAT. It’s worth asking for the making charge separately so you can compare shops fairly.
Tips before you buy
- Check the hallmark and the purity stamp, and ask for an itemised receipt showing weight, purity and making charge.
- Coins and bars carry far lower making charges than jewellery if you’re buying gold as savings.
- Prices usually dip and jump around big US economic announcements; the rate here updates through the day.
How to check the purity of gold in the UAE
Every piece sold by a licensed UAE jeweller should carry a purity stamp. The common marks are 999 for 24K, 916 for 22K, 875 for 21K and 750 for 18K: the number is the gold content per thousand. Larger pieces usually also carry the shop’s own mark and a hallmark from an approved testing laboratory. If a piece has no stamp, ask the shop to test it in front of you, and do not buy it as an investment.
Always ask for an invoice that lists the weight in grams, the karat, the gold rate used, the making charge and the VAT as separate lines. You will need this invoice if you want to sell the piece later, exchange it, or show it to customs when you travel.
Gold Souk, malls or online: where to buy
The gold value is the same everywhere in the UAE because it follows the international price. What changes is the making charge. Traditional markets such as the Deira Gold Souk in Dubai have hundreds of shops close together, so it is easy to compare, and making charges on plain designs are often negotiable. Mall jewellers tend to charge more for making but offer branded collections, warranties and easier exchange policies. Online stores of the big UAE jewellers publish their making charge upfront, which makes comparison simpler.
Jewellery, bars or coins
If you are buying gold mainly as savings, bars and coins usually make more sense than jewellery. They carry little or no making charge, they are easier to resell close to the market price, and investment gold of 99% purity or more is treated differently for VAT. Jewellery carries 5% VAT on the gold value and the making charge, and you lose most of the making charge when you sell. Tourists can usually claim the VAT back on jewellery under the UAE’s tax refund scheme for visitors: ask the shop to register the purchase before you pay.
Selling or exchanging old gold
Jewellers buy old gold at a buyback rate that is below the selling rate shown above, and they may deduct a small percentage for melting and testing. Bring your Emirates ID or passport and the original invoice if you have it. Many shops offer a better deal if you exchange old gold for new jewellery instead of selling it for cash, so ask for both prices before you decide.
When gold demand peaks in the UAE
Demand in UAE gold shops rises around Diwali and Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, Eid and the wedding season, and during the Dubai Shopping Festival when shops run offers on making charges. The gold rate itself is set by the world market, not by these seasons, but festival offers can lower the final bill. If you are not buying for a specific date, buying a little at a time spreads out the effect of daily price swings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate in the UAE today?
The table at the top of this page shows today’s UAE gold rate for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K in dirhams per gram and per tola. It updates through the day as the international gold price moves.
Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India or Pakistan?
Usually, yes. The UAE charges no import duty on gold, so the metal price is close to the international rate. You pay a making charge and 5% VAT, and tourists can often reclaim the VAT on jewellery when they leave the UAE.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 21K gold?
24K is 99.9% pure gold and is mostly sold as coins and bars. 22K is 91.6% gold and 21K is 87.5% gold; the other metals make them harder, which is why most jewellery in the UAE is 22K or 21K.
How many grams are in one tola?
One tola is 11.6638 grams. Buyers from India and Pakistan often compare prices per tola, so this page shows both the per-gram and per-tola rate.
Why is the price in the gold shop higher than this rate?
Shops add a making charge for the design and labour, plus 5% VAT. The rate on this page is for the gold itself, so ask the shop to list the making charge separately before you buy.
When is the best time to buy gold in Dubai?
There is no guaranteed best day, but prices often move sharply around major US economic news. Shopping festivals such as the Dubai Shopping Festival bring lower making charges and promotions, not a lower gold rate.
What is the 22K gold rate in Dubai today in Indian rupees?
Under the rate table we convert today’s 22K and 24K price per gram into Indian rupees at the current dirham rate. Shops in India also add GST and their own making charges, so compare the final bill, not just the gram rate.
How much gold can I carry from Dubai to India?
India’s baggage rules give a duty-free allowance on gold jewellery for passengers who have lived abroad for over a year, with a higher limit for women than for men, and duty on anything above it. The limits and values change, so check the latest Indian customs (CBIC) rules before you fly and keep your purchase invoice.
How much gold can I carry from Dubai to Pakistan?
Pakistan allows passengers to bring a limited amount of gold jewellery and charges duty beyond that, and the rules are revised from time to time. Check the current Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) baggage rules before travelling, declare gold above the limit and carry the shop receipt.
Why does the gold rate change during the day?
The UAE rate follows the international gold price, which trades almost around the clock and reacts to US interest rates, the dollar and world news. That is why the morning and evening rates in Dubai’s gold shops are often different.
