Ever walked past a gym membership price and thought, maybe I’ll just work out at home? GymNation is turning that exact feeling into its latest campaign. The fitness brand has launched a new “Break Glass” campaign across Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah and Bahrain, using emergency-style glass boxes to highlight what it says is one of the biggest barriers stopping people from joining a gym: the cost.

Inside the boxes is a GymNation mannequin surrounded by three-day trial passes, alongside the tongue-in-cheek message: “In Case of Overpriced Membership, Break Glass.” There’s no actual glass-breaking required, though. Passers-by can simply scan the QR code displayed on the installation to claim a complimentary three-day GymNation trial.

Why Is GymNation Running The Campaign Now?

The campaign arrives as gyms across the UAE typically see increased interest following the summer period. With residents returning from holidays and settling back into their usual routines, September can be a popular time for people to revisit their fitness goals.

But GymNation says motivation isn’t necessarily the biggest obstacle. According to the company’s latest research, cost remains a major barrier to gym membership across the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

58% Say Gym Costs Are A Barrier

GymNation’s 2026 UAE & KSA Health & Fitness Report analysed more than 745,000 data points and included responses from more than 15,000 people. The report found that 58% of people who don’t currently attend a gym identified cost as the biggest barrier to joining.

It also found that 50% said more affordable membership options would be the biggest factor that could encourage them to sign up. Those figures form the basis of the Break Glass campaign, with GymNation turning the research into a physical experience rather than simply putting the statistics into an advertisement.

What Is The ‘Break Glass’ Campaign?

The installations are designed to look like emergency boxes you’d normally expect to see containing safety equipment. Instead, they contain a GymNation mannequin and complimentary three-day trial passes.

The message is deliberately simple: “In Case of Overpriced Membership, Break Glass.”

A QR code on the installation allows people to access the offer without actually breaking anything. It’s essentially an invitation to try the gym before committing to a longer membership.

Where Can You Find The Installations?

GymNation says the campaign has appeared across Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah and Bahrain, taking the campaign directly into public spaces where potential customers can interact with it. According to the brand, people have been stopping to investigate the unusual installations and scanning the QR codes to claim their free trials.

The campaign is therefore doing two things at once: getting people talking about gym membership prices while putting a trial offer directly in front of them.

The Bigger Conversation Around Gym Membership Costs

The campaign also taps into a wider question around accessibility in the fitness industry. Gym memberships can come with different costs depending on location, facilities, contract length and the services included.

For someone who is unsure about committing to a membership, a trial can provide an opportunity to experience the facilities and decide whether the cost makes sense for their routine. That’s essentially the idea behind GymNation’s latest activation.

Rather than asking people to immediately sign a membership contract, the campaign gives them a chance to try the experience first.

More Than Just A Marketing Stunt

According to GymNation’s Chief Marketing Officer, Rory McEntee, the campaign was created around the company’s research into the barriers preventing people from becoming gym members. The brand says the aim is to address affordability while making the message approachable and interactive.

And that’s where the mannequin-in-a-glass-box idea comes in. Instead of another advertisement telling people to “get fit” or “start your fitness journey”, the campaign starts with a problem many potential customers can relate to: the price of getting started.

How To Claim The Free Trial

If you come across one of the Break Glass installations, you don’t need to physically break anything.

    Simply:

    1. Find the QR code on the installation.
    2. Scan it using your phone.
    3. Follow the instructions to claim the complimentary three-day trial.
    4. Check the available GymNation location and trial terms before visiting.

The exact terms and availability may vary, so it’s worth checking the information provided when claiming the offer.

    The Khaleej Journal Take

Gym advertising usually revolves around bigger muscles, transformation photos and motivational slogans. GymNation has taken a slightly different route. The Break Glass campaign takes a finding from its own research and turns it into something people can actually interact with on the streets.

Whether the campaign convinces someone to join a gym is another question, but the idea does something useful: it puts the conversation around gym affordability front and centre. And if you’ve been thinking about getting back into a fitness routine but aren’t ready to commit to a membership, the three-day trial gives you a chance to test the waters first.
