How the times are worked out

Prayer times depend on the position of the sun, so they change a little every day and from one city to the next. The times above are calculated for each city with the method used for Qatar’s calendar. Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs publishes the official timetable and the call to prayer in mosques follows it, so the azan in your area may be a minute or two different from this table.

Across Qatar the differences are small. Dukhan, on the west coast, is the furthest from Doha, so its prayers come a few minutes later than in the capital.

Asr: two times

Most mosques in Qatar follow the standard (Shafi’i) Asr time shown first. Followers of the Hanafi school, including many people from South Asia, pray Asr later, when an object’s shadow is twice its length, so the Hanafi time is shown as well.

Friday and Ramadan

Friday prayer (Jumu’ah) replaces Dhuhr on Fridays, with the sermon starting at around the Dhuhr time; arrive early, as larger mosques fill up quickly. In Ramadan, the Fajr time marks the end of suhoor and Maghrib is the time to break the fast.
