Mid-market reference rates, updated a few times a day. Banks and exchange houses add a margin, so the rate you get will be a little lower. Rates by Exchange Rate API

The world’s highest-valued currency

One Kuwaiti dinar is worth more than 3 US dollars, which makes it the highest-valued currency unit in the world. Unlike the other Gulf currencies, the dinar is not pegged to the dollar alone. The Central Bank of Kuwait links it to a basket of currencies of its main trading partners, and the dollar has the largest weight in that basket. So the dinar moves a little against the dollar from day to day, and its rate against the rupee or the peso can change even on days the dollar is flat.

The dinar is divided into 1,000 fils, so amounts in Kuwait are usually written with three decimal places, for example KWD 2.500.

Getting the best rate when you send money home

The rates in the table are mid-market rates: the midpoint between what banks buy and sell at. No exchange house or bank app will give you exactly this rate, because each one keeps a small margin and many also charge a transfer fee. The fairest way to compare is to ask how much your family will receive for the same amount of Kuwaiti dinars, after all fees, rather than looking at the rate alone.

A few habits help. Check two or three providers on the day you send, since margins differ more than most people expect. Sending a larger amount once a month usually costs less than several small transfers, because a flat fee is spread over more money. And around payday, when queues at exchange houses are longest, the rate on a bank or exchange app is often the same as at the counter, without the wait.

How to read the table

The middle column shows how much of each currency you get for 1 KWD. The right-hand column works the other way: how many KWD one unit of that currency is worth, which is useful if you are paid or quoted in another currency. The quick conversions underneath show common amounts in Indian and Pakistani rupees, Bangladeshi taka and Philippine pesos.

Frequently asked questions

How many Indian rupees is 1 Kuwaiti dinar today?

Today’s KWD to INR rate is in the table above, along with quick conversions for 10, 50, 100 and 500 dinars. It is a mid-market rate; exchange houses and banks will give a little less.

Is the Kuwaiti dinar pegged to the dollar?

Not to the dollar alone. Kuwait links the dinar to an undisclosed basket of currencies, in which the US dollar has the largest weight, so it moves slightly against the dollar.

Why is the Kuwaiti dinar so valuable?

The dinar has been worth several dollars since it was introduced in 1961, and Kuwait’s oil income and large reserves support it. A high unit value is a choice about how the currency is denominated, not a sign that prices in Kuwait are higher.
