How the Kuwait gold price is worked out

Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. Unlike most Gulf currencies, the Kuwaiti dinar is not pegged to the dollar alone but to a basket of currencies, so the gold price in KWD moves with both the world gold price and the dinar’s daily rate. One ounce is 31.1 grams, and lower purities are priced by their gold content: 22K is 91.7% gold, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%.

What you pay in a shop

Jewellers add a making charge on top of the gold value, which depends on the design and the shop. Kuwait has no VAT, so the price you pay is the gold value plus the making charge. Ask for the weight, purity, gold price and making charge to be shown separately on the invoice.

Which gold is most popular in Kuwait

21K and 22K are the most common purities in Kuwaiti jewellery shops. 21K keeps the deep yellow colour of high-purity gold while being hard enough for daily wear, and 22K is popular with buyers from South Asia. 18K is used mostly for diamond and modern designs, and 24K is bought mainly as bars and coins for savings.

Where to buy gold in Kuwait

The gold souq at Souq Al-Mubarakiya in Kuwait City is the best-known place to buy, with many shops side by side so you can compare making charges. Mall jewellers across Kuwait sell the same purities, usually with higher making charges on branded designs.

Selling old gold

Shops buy old gold at a buyback price below the selling rate in the table, and may deduct a small amount for testing and melting. Bring your civil ID and the original invoice if you have it, and ask what the shop would pay in cash and what it would allow if you exchange the piece for new jewellery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 21K gold rate in Kuwait today?

Today’s 21K price per gram in Kuwaiti dinars is in the table above, next to 24K, 22K and 18K. It updates through the day from the international gold price.

Is there VAT on gold in Kuwait?

No. Kuwait has not introduced VAT, so jewellery is priced at the gold value plus the shop’s making charge.

Why is the gold price in KWD different from the dollar price?

The Kuwaiti dinar follows a basket of currencies rather than the dollar alone, so the KWD gold price moves with the world gold price and with the dinar’s exchange rate.

Why is the shop price higher than this table?

The table shows the value of the gold itself. Shops add a making charge for the design and workmanship, which differs from shop to shop.
