How the times are worked out

Prayer times depend on the position of the sun, so they change a little every day and from one city to the next. The times above are calculated for each city with the Gulf Region method. Oman’s Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs publishes the official timetable, which mosques follow, so the azan in your area may be a few minutes different from this table.

Oman is a large country, and the gap between cities is bigger than in the rest of the Gulf. Salalah, in Dhofar in the far south-west, is about 400 kilometres west of Muscat, so its prayers come noticeably later, which you can see in the table of other cities.

Asr: two times

Most mosques in Oman use the standard Asr time shown first. Followers of the Hanafi school, including many people from South Asia, pray Asr later, when an object’s shadow is twice its length, so the Hanafi time is shown as well.

Friday and Ramadan

Friday prayer (Jumu’ah) replaces Dhuhr on Fridays, with the sermon starting at around the Dhuhr time. In Ramadan, the Fajr time marks the end of suhoor and Maghrib is the time to break the fast.
