Mid-market reference rates, updated a few times a day. Banks and exchange houses add a margin, so the rate you get will be a little lower. Rates by Exchange Rate API
Why one rial buys so much
The Omani rial is one of the highest-valued currencies in the world, and it is pegged to the US dollar at OMR 0.3845, which means 1 rial is worth about 2.60 dollars. The Central Bank of Oman holds that peg, so the rial moves against the rupee, the peso or the euro only as much as the dollar does. Because each rial is worth so much, a small change in the rupee’s value makes a visible difference to what a monthly transfer is worth back home.
The rial is divided into 1,000 baisa, so prices and rates in Oman are often written with three decimal places, for example OMR 1.250.
Getting the best rate when you send money home
The rates in the table are mid-market rates: the midpoint between what banks buy and sell at. No exchange house or bank app will give you exactly this rate, because each one keeps a small margin and many also charge a transfer fee. The fairest way to compare is to ask how much your family will receive for the same amount of Omani rials, after all fees, rather than looking at the rate alone.
A few habits help. Check two or three providers on the day you send, since margins differ more than most people expect. Sending a larger amount once a month usually costs less than several small transfers, because a flat fee is spread over more money. And around payday, when queues at exchange houses are longest, the rate on a bank or exchange app is often the same as at the counter, without the wait.
How to read the table
The middle column shows how much of each currency you get for 1 OMR. The right-hand column works the other way: how many OMR one unit of that currency is worth, which is useful if you are paid or quoted in another currency. The quick conversions underneath show common amounts in Indian and Pakistani rupees, Bangladeshi taka and Philippine pesos.
