UAE school admissions 2027-28 come with a catch. If your child is due to start school next year, you are in the first group of parents with no transition rules to fall back on. The 2026-27 school year allowed some one-off flexibility under the new age cut-off. From 2027-28, that flexibility ends, and every new registration follows the revised rule.
That makes the birth year the deciding factor for most families. This guide sets out which grade your child fits, the registration windows to watch, and the documents to gather now.
Quick answer: For UAE school admissions in 2027-28, schools that start in August or September use 31 December 2027 as the age cut-off. A child born in 2024 enters Pre-KG or FS1, 2023 means KG1 or FS2, 2022 means KG2 or Year 1, and 2021 means Grade 1 or Year 2. Schools that start in April, mainly Indian curriculum schools, use 31 March 2027 instead.
Why 2027-28 is different
The Ministry of Education moved the age cut-off from 31 August to 31 December, starting with the 2026-27 academic year. In Dubai, KHDA called 2026-27 a transitional year. It allowed a one-time choice between FS1 and FS2 for children born between 1 September and 31 December 2022.
From 2027-28, there is no transitional flexibility left. As Khaleej Times reported from the KHDA guide, all new registrations follow the revised cut-off. The rule only affects new admissions. Children already enrolled are not moved.

UAE school admissions 2027-28: which grade by birth year?
Schools starting in August or September (31 December cut-off)
| Grade | Age by 31 Dec 2027 | Child born in |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-KG / FS1 | 3 | 2024 |
| KG1 / FS2 | 4 | 2023 |
| KG2 / Year 1 | 5 | 2022 |
| Grade 1 / Year 2 | 6 | 2021 |
This applies to private schools and nurseries that start in August or September, which covers British, American, IB, French and most other curricula. It also applies to public schools, where entry starts from KG1.
Schools starting in April (31 March cut-off)
Most Indian curriculum schools in the UAE start their year in April and keep 31 March as the cut-off. For the 2027-28 year starting in April 2027, one Dubai Indian school publishes these birth date ranges, based on KHDA guidelines:
| Grade | Minimum age | Born between |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-KG | 3 | 1 Apr 2023 and 31 Mar 2024 |
| KG1 | 4 | 1 Apr 2022 and 31 Mar 2023 |
| KG2 | 5 | 1 Apr 2021 and 31 Mar 2022 |
| Grade 1 | 6 | 1 Apr 2020 and 31 Mar 2021 |

Registration timelines for 2027-28
Public schools: The Ministry of Education has not yet announced the 2027-28 window. For 2026-27, registration ran from 9 February to 6 March 2026 through the MOE website and app. If the pattern holds, expect the 2027-28 window around February 2027.
Private schools: There is no single national window. Each school runs its own admissions, and popular schools fill early. As a general guide:
- October to January: applications, open days and waiting lists
- January to March: entrance assessments, especially for older grades
- March to May: offers made and seat deposits paid
- Summer: final documents and KHDA or ADEK registration
For April-start Indian schools, the cycle runs earlier, as the year itself begins in April 2027.
Documents to prepare now
- Child’s passport with a valid UAE residence visa
- Emirates ID for the child and both parents
- Parents’ passports
- Birth certificate, attested if issued outside the UAE
- Vaccination record, for example from the Al Hosn app
- Passport photos
- Tenancy contract or Ejari as proof of address
- For Grade 1 or Year 2 and above: transfer certificate and latest report card
Birth certificate attestation for documents from abroad can take a few weeks, so start this first.
What if your child is moving from abroad?
Up to KG2 or Year 1, placement is by age alone. From Grade 1 or Year 2, the transfer certificate is the main reference. In Dubai, a child can still join the grade that matches their age even without prior formal schooling, as long as they meet UAE entry requirements, and the school should provide extra support. KHDA’s own example is a seven-year-old arriving from Finland, where school starts later.

Fees and deposits to expect
Registration fees vary by emirate and school. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK caps the registration fee at 5% of approved tuition, and it is deducted from fees. In Dubai, registration fees and seat deposits are set by each school, so ask whether a deposit is refundable before you pay.
Pro Tip: If your child was born in late 2023 or late 2024, check the table against 31 December, not 31 August. Many parents still go by the old rule and miss a year they are now eligible for.
Our Take
The new cut-off is simpler than the old one. For most September-start schools, the calendar year your child was born in decides the grade. The challenge for 2027-28 is timing, not rules. Popular private schools take applications from October, so families who wait for the public school window in February may find their first-choice private schools already full.
