The Qatar National Day 2026 holiday comes with a catch. 18 December falls on a Friday this year, which is already the weekend. That one detail changes how the holiday works, and it is why so many employees are asking whether they will get a day off at all.
The short version is that government staff and private sector staff are covered by two different announcements, and they do not always say the same thing. Here is what each group can expect, based on the law and on what happened the last time National Day landed on a Friday.
Quick answer: Qatar National Day 2026 is on Friday 18 December. Private sector employees are entitled to one paid holiday for National Day under Qatar’s labour rules. Government staff get the dates set by the Amiri Diwan, which has not yet announced the 2026 holiday.
Qatar National Day 2026 holiday: what we know so far
| Government sector | Private sector | |
|---|---|---|
| Who announces it | Amiri Diwan | Ministry of Labour |
| Usually announced | Around mid-December | A day or two before 18 December |
| Entitlement | Set each year by the Amiri Diwan | One paid working day |
| 2026 status | Not yet announced | Not yet announced |
What private sector employees can expect
Qatar’s labour rules give private sector workers a fixed list of paid public holidays: three working days for Eid Al Fitr, three for Eid Al Adha and one working day for National Day on 18 December. Employers must also give three more paid days at their own discretion.
Last year, the Ministry of Labour confirmed Thursday 18 December 2025 as an official paid holiday for everyone in the private sector. It added that if a company needs staff to work that day, overtime rules under Article 74 of the Labour Law apply.
The question for 2026 is what happens when the day falls on a Friday, which is already the weekly rest day for most workers. The Ministry has not said yet how it will handle this. Its announcement will decide whether there is a paid day off on another date, so until it comes out, ask HR rather than assume.
What government employees can expect
The best guide is 2020, the last year National Day fell on a Friday. That year, the Amiri Diwan announced on 14 December that Thursday 17 December would be an official holiday, with work resuming on Sunday 20 December. In practice, that gave ministries and government bodies a three-day weekend.
2026 has exactly the same calendar layout. If the Amiri Diwan follows the 2020 approach, Thursday 17 December 2026 would be the holiday, with staff back at work on Sunday 20 December. Treat this as likely, not certain, until the official statement comes out.
Possible long weekend
| Day | Date | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | 17 Dec 2026 | Possible holiday, if the 2020 pattern repeats |
| Friday | 18 Dec 2026 | National Day and weekend |
| Saturday | 19 Dec 2026 | Weekend |
| Sunday | 20 Dec 2026 | Expected return to work |
Schools and banks
Schools usually follow the government announcement, but private schools may confirm their own arrangements in a letter to parents. Banks follow the holiday dates set by the Qatar Central Bank, so check your bank’s notice before planning any branch visit.
If you have to work on National Day
- Check your contract and company handbook for how public holidays are paid
- Ask HR in writing whether a replacement day or overtime will apply
- Keep a record of the hours you worked on the holiday
- If something is still unclear, contact the Ministry of Labour about your rights
Plan the rest of your December
National Day celebrations usually fill the Corniche and Darb Al Saai in the days leading up to 18 December, so expect heavier traffic in central Doha. If you are travelling or sorting out paperwork before the holiday, our guides on checking your Qatar residence permit status and paying traffic violations online can save you a trip.
We will update this article as soon as the Amiri Diwan and the Ministry of Labour confirm the 2026 dates.
Our Take
The Friday clash is the real story this year. Government staff have a clear precedent from 2020, but private sector workers do not, because their entitlement is one paid working day and Friday is not a working day for most of them. The sooner the Ministry of Labour explains how that day will be honoured, the easier it will be for HR teams and employees to plan December. Until then, keep any travel plans flexible.
